Hi everyone, I apologise for not posting anything for a while; life is busy at the moment. So here is a quick post of a small but quality 44mm log cabin now residing in Jersey. Sadly, the customer had bought his first cabin from a mass producer, and with the first winter gales blew it over, so he contacted us and said, Could we supply him with a cabin that was suitable for his needs? Of course, we could.
Too many people buy cheap and get cheap, and as you can quite clearly see, even our smaller cabins leave an impression.
Beautiful windows and doors, hand made, from joinery glulam. Designed to last a lifetime, all our hardware is German quality.
As you can see, this utility building is perfect for storage plus a little office. What we are finding is that a lot of people are getting sucked into buying cheap now, but in a few years they will as always come to us and ask us if we can supply windows and doors as there’s 100% have fallen to bits. The answer to that is always NO, as our windows and doors are hand built for our cabins only, and one of the main reasons most cheap cabins are cheap is because the windows and doors they get with the cabin body are awful. All of ours come with double-glazed standard toughened glass.
You will also note that we use a lot of purlins to hold up the roof, just in case you want to put solar panels, insulation, or a heavy roof covering. or all combined.
This little 4m x 5m log cabin was assembled by the customer, and we think he did an amazing job. It sits on a concrete base that is treated with a rubber solution that we recommend that stops all moisture coming up through the base! Well done, Andy!!
Today I will explain why building a timber frame around an interlocking body is hopelessly foolish and is solely a money-making scam by unscrupulous builders and bodge artists who sell log cabins. A single-skin 44mm or 70mm log cabin, interlocked, is not intended to have an external, internal skin applied. Why? It is simple because it travels and shrinks, and once its movement is complete, it will move indefinitely, depending on the weather. Unfortunately, there are many uneducated people out there who only see pound signs when you approach them about an insulated cabin, and their response, in order to get more money from you, is that battening the external or interior walls is the best course of action for that perfect insulated house. Rubbish. Also, we see so many foolish, unskilled weekend builders; screw the logs together? What the —K? Who said fastening the log together with long screws was an excellent idea?
Too many cabin builders have too many ideas on how to build a log cabin, and the more films I see on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, the worse the cabins become. So, why do they put screws in? I believe it is because they don’t know what day it is, and what they’re smoking could be one of the reasons. You never screw an interlocking cabin together. I can hear you all asking why. Simply put, once you have completed the cabin, it will begin to shrink. This is a natural process that must not be hampered; otherwise, you will have major problems with your cabin very quickly. You are effectively preventing it from moving in any direction, including downward. In the summer, the logs will begin to shrink, leaving gaps in the walls, and if you are extremely unlucky, the entire cabin will be a perilous construction. You cannot screw each log together. Next, putting an external or internal frame around the cabin will be a nightmare after half a year; if it’s external, the inside dries out; the external is dealing with mother nature, so you have the pull on the fixings all year round and if your dumb fitting team has screwed all the logs together, your problems will be exponentially worse, potentially resulting in gaps opening in the walls. Windows and doors become loose, and, in the worst-case scenario, the roof becomes unstable. This is no joke. It is a fact. This is why I designed the twin skin system many years ago. I have designed and manufactured this system in many different ways, and the best is as it is now. The problem with using a dovetail joint for the internal wall to fix itself to the external wall within the cavity is that as the logs shrink, both internal and external shrink at different rates, and the internal log tends not to slide down the dovetail cut, causing problems. Unless you go with Glulam, which is twice, if not three times the price, the consequence is the same: difficulties. Before anyone asks me, yes, we screw on the roof boards and flooring, etc, but we do not fix the logs together; our interlocking joint is super strong and super water-proof. So, my twin skin design for an interlocking cabin of any size is the best way to manufacture the best insulated cabin; it is not screwed together, it moves freely, but it is strong and super safe; it is a great investment; we know how to manufacture and assemble it, and the result is a fantastic building at a fantastic price. I believe that what I built many years ago was the greatest approach to manufacturing a log cabin that is insulated in a variety of ways. We have the greatest windows and doors in the industry, and our pricing is fair. Consider a 90-square-meter building with 2 beds, a bathroom, a living room, a kitchen area, etc, with 340mm walls (70mm x 70mm) and a 200mm void for less than €45,000 ex works, complete with double-glazed windows and doors and toughened glass. So how does it work, Simple, we, sell everything EX Works Lithuania. I was told off today for swearing, sorry Mr Customer, but the British have been ripped off so badly by their so called friendly neighborhood dealers for years, and the amounts you pay for your cabins now, are sadly grand theft in every way, and when you start comparing our low low, low, low prices that will eventually cover Factory Cabins from top to Bottom, our pricing will shock you. Many unscrupulous companies have stolen our DF range imagery and added them to their websites, do not be conned.. Please tell us who they are.
So why have we done this, well it’s simple, we the mills this time round will make sure that no customer loses his/her money when the recession does actually hit us in a few short months, which it will, ( be sure of that) if you look at how many companies in 2007 went bust, and then restarted and owed customers money, and are now under new trade names and trading now, you would be even more shocked, and they are sadly the leading brands, Even us the mills were owed 100.s of thousands, it was then after 2007 that we all stopped giving credit the UK dealers in full. There was no more factoring with banks etc. Sadly the UK dealers destroyed the trust of banks and mills alike.
How many of the companies in the UK went bust in 2007, it’s a long time ago, but to me it was like yesterday, and our dealers were ordering lots and lots of cabins, and then ” whoops” our dealers then said they could not pay their invoices,” surprise’ surprise” which is what always happens when you give credit or trust someone ,even with contracts in place etc, especially in this market, as its fickle and most UK companies have huge over heads, and go bust very very quickly when the customers stop coming in, and the next thing you know, your told sorry, we have gone bust and speak to the bank, the bank say sorry and you lose your money.
Sadly in the UK going bankrupt and restarting again is too easy, but you the customer, are left high and dry, and i saw this before in 2007, and i helped personally many customers get their money back and their cabins delivered.
Also the market slowed down to a crawl because the dealers were upping their prices to try and stay afloat, to pay their Garden Centre rent and staff, and eventually they went bust, and customers lost their deposits and cabins and dreams.
So why have we decided to go ex works, simple, we will not let our hard work be spoiled by greedy individuals who have lived the high life and think that you the customer would never buy, purchase a cabin ex works, they think you the customer will only buy from them, because you trust them, they are after all local, they know your area, and they are British and you trust them. Well! I am British and you can trust me, and i can honestly say the prices in the UK will come down, to my level, and quality and cost will be on par, i do not sell crap, unlike 90% of the companies out there.
