Carnival in Koln at the weekend was amazing, but my real reason for going to Germany was to scout out the log cabin competition, and to check the quality level German companies offer to their public.

Before I start the review I am in no way bias, I am just reporting what I saw!

Firstly, the size of cabins on display seems to be between 3m x 3m up to 5m x 4m, 5m x 6m and they are all painted, and this surprised me, but then I realized why they painted them all.

There are many German companies manufacturing Log Cabins, but in all honesty, their quality level is quite disappointing, that is not to say all Log Cabins manufactured by German Companies are awful, I can only comment on what I saw.

The reason they paint in partly is to cover up the large dark dead knots, and in most cabins, there were plenty of these, and surprisingly there was damp and water ingress in nearly all the displays.

What’s amazing though is that prices were compatible to the UK.

OK German only has 19% vat, add the extra 1% and Germany is on par with the UK in pricing, yet with out doubt our UK quality levels are 25% better than what is on offer to the public in Germany.

How many of you out there want to own that log cabin man cave at the bottom of the garden, to get away from screaming children, maybe the wife, to have your friends round and have a game of pool, or just sit at your own bar, smoke a cigar and watch the TV in peace?

Man caves over the last few years have become quite the rage, but when you look back at the first man caves offered in log form, you will start to notice that the doors and windows are falling apart, and the windows get steamed up every time the footballs on!

Last month I had a guy call me and send me a photo of his man cave, and trust me when I say this, the cabin was a mess, not just a mess, it was without joking sadly awful. He told me that he wanted to add an extension, and I told him honestly that it was only fit for a bonfire.

Now the reason I am writing this blog today, is not to laugh at his dilemma, but to make a point about log cabins and what is fit for purpose and what is not!

If you want to own a man cave then there are a few things you must take into account before you decide to purchase a cheap bulk manufactured cabin.

Cheap nasty cabins come with cheap nasty doors, these doors normally are manufactured with cheap pine, and cheap pine will twist eventually, plus cheap pine windows will also twist but more than that, they will leak.

Windows and doors are actually more than 70% of the overall quality of a log cabin, and when purchasing a cabin one must take notice what kind of windows and doors you’re getting.

Most manufacturers will show you a picture of a window or door, which normally is an upgraded window, which you can purchase if you pay more money, because if they showed you their standard windows you would run a mile!

There are lots of tricks on the internet to get you fooled into thinking your getting X when you really are getting Y, and if you see a quality window or door on a website, your mind believes this is really what you are purchasing.

Too many companies put upgrades on the homepage into tricking you into thinking this is a standard window or door set with their ranges.

Log Cabin Man Caves normally have a quite few electrical devices installed, and this causes heat, so ventilation is needed.

Sadly, if you have a cheap set of windows and doors in your cabin, the heat also escapes through these, and that’s when mould takes hold and your windows and doors rot away quickly. Plus they look awful.

So what do you do?

Quite simple actually, don’t buy a cheap nasty bulk log cabin, look for something with a Residential Window and Door set that is Trada certified and is manufactured using glulam joinery timber, which are water tight, and fit for purpose.

Moreover, you want to purchase a door with an insulated plate and not that’s fitted with planks of 19mm T&G.

When purchasing any log cabin there are many things to take into account.

The Base.

Before beginning any work, you must be extremely positive that you are able to complete this type of work. As corrections can be immensely pricey! When laying the concrete base please keep in mind the time it will take for the concrete to set.

Do not expect to erect your building on a newly laid concrete pad.

How many people pay thousands of pounds for Log Cabins, and not add guttering, well the amount is staggering! Most if not all companies that sell log cabins, have in their terms and conditions normally quite stringent rules on fitting guttering immediately, however so many people just don’t.

What I find hard to understand is why? Personally my choice of stain for any log cabin should be yacht-decking varnish, as decking varnish has elasticity, is impervious to ultraviolet light, and seals a log cabin wall log nice and tight, from water penetration, bugs, rot etc.

Making your cabin almost water proof. Yacht Varnish is extremely expensive, however so is replacing the cabin after 5 years!

Sadly, most people stain their cabin with some cheap stain that costs X from S and Q and think that’s that, and forget to put the all-important guttering.

Log Cabins are manufactured from timber,NOT PLASTIC, they are designed to be a garden office, that extra room in the garden, play area, etc, but for it to last the test of time, you need to take the rain water as far away from the cabin as possible.

Log Cabins are not bullet proof, and for that matter water proof, and the way to keep mother nature out of the inside of the cabins is to seal it up good and tight, and to prevent the rain running down the walls, which will cause serious damage, and prevents the cabin serving you for years, you must fit guttering that feeds into a good drain away.

There are so many people now all selling the same kind of log cabin! They all have cheap windows and doors, they are all priced around the same price, and what is really amazing the public could get a lot better for the same price if they just did their homework and really looked deep into who sells what.

What I have noticed over the years that if you are advertising on the front page of Google, that is as a sure fire way of selling a cabin. However, what is a mystery to me is why the public purchase the first thing (cabin) they find.

Log Cabins are not really a disposable commodity! They are quite expensive to purchase, if you put them in the same category as most garden equipment, as they serve a purpose, plus you need to put foundations down, electricity etc. So purchasing one should be studied not rushed.

Log Cabins come in all shapes and sizes, yet have you noticed, apart from us, everyone is selling the same designs.

And they all have the same price point, it’s almost like it’s choreographed.

I have done a lot of looking around the web, and looking at what companies can actually offer and what the price points are.

Most companies charge in the region of 1200, to 1500 for a Residential Double Door, and between 300 to 500 for a Residential Window.

What kind of quality these are is another matter, and if they are certified most don’t say, however, the price of these doors and windows are ludicrous.

Our New Clock House has 8 residential Windows and I residential double Door- all double glazed, tilt and turn certified,. The selling price from our dealers for the Clock House is £4980 delivered. If we were to calculate taking the lower price point from the other companies for the windows and door, then just an upgrade for their residential windows and doors would cost about £3000+.So where is the transport, profit, tax etc, see where I am coming from?

Then you have to take into account fitting a window of that quality onto a 45mm wall log, now that is a completely different story, as that takes money, skill and dedication.

And all this is something we have done and are now offering.

If you truly want the best log cabins for your customers, then offering them anything less than this new breed of cabin is criminal!

I receive so many spam emails from too many companies selling log cabins.

Now that’s not all bad, but! when they start calling themselves Nordic this and nordic that, you must ask yourself this question, why?

The company in question is based here in Lithuania, and their factories are here in the Baltics.

Now we all know that Nordic means, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland, Norden areas!

It does not mean Lithuania, Latvia, or f–king Spain.

So why does a company based in Lithuania proclaim they are from a Nordic Country!

Easy, to fool the customer into thinking they are from Scandinavia, which is supposed to mean better this and better that! A lie! Actually I am disgusted.

My company is very proud to be working here in the Baltics, I am proud of our workforce and I am proud with what we have achieved here. And I in no way would ever try and palm myself off, or my company as a Nordic Company!

So to those that are ashamed of the Baltics, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, all I can say is…—–k off to those nordic areas you are so proudly proclaiming you are from and don’t come back!! Your a disgrace to this region!

New Deluxe Standard DF Log Cabins Range for 2016

Yesterday we were very pleased to meet up with our two partners from the UK, who combined have over 30 show sites in the north and south of the UK.

The show around day consisted of product knowledge and a show around our new spray booths, windows and door lines, and fabrication.

The visit was to highlight our new and improved Deluxe DF Standard Range, and to show our dealers, and their sales guy’s the quality of the new residential windows and doors which adorn this amazing range now. We would like to thank them all for coming over, and also for their support in offering to the public the best standard range of cabins ever to come to the market!

Some people find it hard to understand the term, Deluxe Standard, as they seem to work against one another, but actually, it makes perfect sense.

Unlike all other manufacturers, we offer these Deluxe Cabins with all their goodies attached at one standard price, there is no up sale here. We offer 20mm Roof boards. 28mm flooring, we offer Residential Double glazed Tilt and Turn CE-Trada Approved windows and doors. That is a whole mouth full of extras, and yet the pricing is hundreds, if not thousands of pounds lower than anyone else on the market.

We even spray paint the windows to your choice of colour!

There are companies out there that are just so greedy, that our pricing is almost 1/3 less, which just goes to show, how greedy the Germans and Dutch tend to be!

I must laugh actually as we are Log Cabins LV, yet we are run and owned by a British Family, who have set the standards of the production from day one, which is why the ethos of the company is quality, design, price.

Greed was left out from the beginning. (Brits play fair)..

If you are a dealer looking for a new supplier, we are always ready to listen, however we vet all new comers, we want timber trained sales people to join us, preferably family businesses, also shed manufacturers that have been manufacturing for more than 10 years. We want only the best. And we do not take on people who have a history of bankruptcy.

OK on to another subject..

Yesterday we received a offer from another manufacturer on a Spam email client Mail chimps, what surprised us was 2 things, firstly, if they can not spell, or be bothered to use spell check. So? How can you trust this company to count how many parts fit in a packed building?

Secondly, they are offering camping pods, that do not have any form of CE certified doors or windows, or even trickle vents, which as we all know can lead to deaths sadly.

To those manufacturers that want to offer accommodation to the public, beware! In the UK you can be tried for manslaughter if a building you claim is fit for human dwelling turns out not to be and a death occurs!

Moreover, these entire log manufactured shaped pods, made of interlocking T&G timber are not fit for camping sites, or overnight dwellings. They are extremely dangerous and way over priced.

That’s my rant finished. I just get so angry when I see these companies fooling the public and offering absolute s–t, for a sovereign! Makes my blood boil! Log Cabins and camping pods are heavy structures and must be manufactured with care and precision.

Have you noticed as you trawl through the Internet, that most of the log cabins are manufactured using the same techniques?

We ourselves offer this same manufacturing technique, as price is the factor here.

However what we have done is really look at how we can better our log cabins, how we can make them the best they can be, a Deluxe Range, that can be offered under our standard pricing structure.

DELUXE WINDOWS AND DOORS FOR LOG CABINS

Investing heavily in new machinery, blades etc, meant we were able to shrink our residential standard window and door frames down from 110mm to 44mm, But! Still offering our quality, still offering strength, and still offering our guarantees!

One of the reasons why I write so many articles, blogs, about our new windows and doors, I think is to help the public understand that most log cabin bodies are simply the same, a 45mm log is a 45mm log.

The notching, molding and machining can vary differently, but!!! It is quite difficult to mess up wall logs! Actually, I have seen a few cabins where the machine operator must have fallen asleep or been drunk, as the word square could not have been associated with these cabins!

Some tell tale signs of lesser quality can be found when looking at the floor and roof board quality.

I hear there are some companies offering 19mm, 20mm thickness flooring, this is sadly inadequate, but these Log cabins are manufactured to be price driven, and are in all honesty (crap).

There are Dutch and German companies in name only that manufacture now in Poland and Estonia, their quality level is good, but their sales force spell bind the customers with grandeur and quality level’s that quite frankly are not there, and over charge greedily!

Log Cabins LV will utterly, completely, upset the Log Cabins industry in January, our quality and price will not just put the cat among the pigeons, it will show the public who is fleecing them, and who is not!!

Log Cabins are normally manufactured from either Pine or Spruce, depending on the time of year, pine is preferred by some mills, and spruce others, most bulk manufactures mixed species, which is OK if you a purchasing a cheap 19mm log cabin with an age expectancy of 3 years, otherwise stay clear of mixed species Log Cabins. Ask the company concerned if they mix, they must tell you as part of your rights as a consumer.
